Whispering-gallery mode resonators have become a basic brick of modern photonics, thanks to their extremely narrow resonances. The resulting enhanced light-matter interaction can be leveraged in a variety of applications, from biological sensors to clocks and optical telecommunications. This labwork has been developped to allow Master 2 students to manipulate these resonators, as well as to illustrate wave-optics concepts seen during lectures: propagating modes, evanescent coupling, resonances and interferences.
