Human colour vision is based on three primary colours: red, green and blue. The colour vision of birds is based on the same three colours – but also ultraviolet. Biologists at Lund University in Sweden have shown that the fourth primary colour of birds, ultraviolet, means that they see the world in a completely different way.

On February 8, 2019, the business newspaper Les Echos announced the ranking of the 500 French growth champions. This survey lists the companies whose turnover grew the most between 2014 and 2017. ALPAO, who specializes in adaptive optics and wavefront control, is part of this ranking and positions itself on the podium of Isere companies thanks to an increase in its turnover of +107% over this period.
Flying optical cats for quantum communication

An old thought experiment now appears in a new light. In 1935 Erwin Schrödinger formulated a thought experiment designed to capture the paradoxical nature of quantum physics. A group of researchers led by Gerhard Rempe, Director of the Department of Quantum Dynamics at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, has now realized an optical version of Schrödinger’s thought experiment in the laboratory.
EPIC advocates for Photonics European Partnership in Horizon Europe 2021-2027

The European Parliament and European Council recently signed a partial political agreement on Horizon Europe. This agreement endorsed the European Commission proposal for three levels of European partnerships in the future Horizon Europe programme, including co-programmed partnerships based on the cPPP model as per Photonics21 in Horizon 2020.

The European research project LAMPAS is working on the world record of fabrication throughput for the production of functionalized surfaces in the domestic appliance market by combining the outstanding characteristics of three laser technologies, being High-Average-Power Ultrafast Lasers, Direct Laser Interference Patterning and Polygon Scanner processing.

Microlight3D, qui développe des machines de micro-impression 3D ultra-haute résolution pour applications industrielles et scientifiques, annonce l’acquisition de Smart Force Technologies (SFT), un fabricant français, plusieurs fois primé, d’un système de lithographie sans masque pour micro-impression 2D. SFT est une spin-off du Laboratoire des Technologies de la Microélectronique (LTM), un centre de recherche de premier plan spécialisé dans la miniaturisation de dispositifs micro- et nanoélectroniques, affilié au CNRS, à l’Université Grenoble Alpes et au CEA.
Un microlaser émettant de la lumière hélicoïdale

Des chercheurs du Centre de Nanosciences et de Nanotechnologies (C2N) à Palaiseau, avec des collaborateurs du Laboratoire de physique des lasers, atomes et molécules (PHLAM) à Lille et de l’Institut Pascal à Clermont-Ferrand, ont réalisé un laser intégré dont l’architecture novatrice permet d’émettre de la lumière dans des états chiraux, produisant ainsi des tire-bouchons de lumière. Leur design présente l'avantage de permettre de contrôler la chiralité de ces tire-bouchons (d’horaire à antihoraire) à l’aide de techniques optiques simples.
