Three leading European Nobel Laureates from France and Germany have warned that failure to include a dedicated programme for photonics in the EU’s next Horizon Europe 2021-27 programme will jeopardise the deep technology capability and capacity that will be essential for powering the future European digital economy.

Le 15e symposium franco-israélien sur l’optique non linéaire et quantique (FRISNO 15) s’est tenu du 24 au 20 mars 2019, à Aussois au Centre Paul Langevin du CNRS. Alternant tous les deux ans entre France et Israël, cette édition a connu un regain d’affluence, comptant 87 participants. Au-delà des disciplines de prédilection inscrites dans son intitulé, elle s’élargit depuis quelques années à la photonique/plasmonique ainsi qu’aux techniques optiques d’imagerie du vivant.
ALPhANOV – MBDA : un laboratoire sur l'interaction laser-matière

Le 27 mars a été inauguré le laboratoire commun ALPhANOV – MBDA. Depuis plus de trois ans, ALPhANOV et MBDA travaillent ensemble afin de créer un laboratoire commun pour l’étude scientifique de l’interaction laser-matière. Ce laboratoire fortement instrumenté et automatisé permet la réalisation d’essais en toute sécurité avec une source laser 10 kW associée à plusieurs têtes optiques montées sur un robot.

Human colour vision is based on three primary colours: red, green and blue. The colour vision of birds is based on the same three colours – but also ultraviolet. Biologists at Lund University in Sweden have shown that the fourth primary colour of birds, ultraviolet, means that they see the world in a completely different way.

On February 8, 2019, the business newspaper Les Echos announced the ranking of the 500 French growth champions. This survey lists the companies whose turnover grew the most between 2014 and 2017. ALPAO, who specializes in adaptive optics and wavefront control, is part of this ranking and positions itself on the podium of Isere companies thanks to an increase in its turnover of +107% over this period.
Flying optical cats for quantum communication

An old thought experiment now appears in a new light. In 1935 Erwin Schrödinger formulated a thought experiment designed to capture the paradoxical nature of quantum physics. A group of researchers led by Gerhard Rempe, Director of the Department of Quantum Dynamics at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, has now realized an optical version of Schrödinger’s thought experiment in the laboratory.
EPIC advocates for Photonics European Partnership in Horizon Europe 2021-2027

The European Parliament and European Council recently signed a partial political agreement on Horizon Europe. This agreement endorsed the European Commission proposal for three levels of European partnerships in the future Horizon Europe programme, including co-programmed partnerships based on the cPPP model as per Photonics21 in Horizon 2020.

The European research project LAMPAS is working on the world record of fabrication throughput for the production of functionalized surfaces in the domestic appliance market by combining the outstanding characteristics of three laser technologies, being High-Average-Power Ultrafast Lasers, Direct Laser Interference Patterning and Polygon Scanner processing.
